Reflection 1: Insta-regret—Has Social Media Ruined Travel?
Social media—especially TikTok and Instagram—has dramatically altered the ways we travel. For many, the goal today is no longer to simply explore new places, but to capture that “perfect” shot or video—so much so that people often take the same photos over and over. Has this shift ruined the modern travel experience? For instance, consider how many of us now choose destinations based on what's "Instagrammable" or what’s trending on TikTok. Not only has this led to overcrowding at some popular spots, but it's also had a huge impact—mostly negative—on the environment and local communities. Instead of “soaking in” a new environment, many travelers are more focused on getting likes and shares. Do you think social media has made travel less enjoyable? And have you noticed yourself planning trips with an eye on social media validation? Finally, do you think the pressure to post is affecting how we experience the world?
