Reflection 2: Stay Where You Are—On the Joys of Staycationing

Lucky you—you have a whole week off from school and work coming up.

What will you do with your time off?

Sounds like a great opportunity for a little traveling.

You could book a flight. But that’ll mean coordinating all the details, including wading through travel sites to find the best deals. There will also be lodging to consider. And what about costs? Flying, after all, isn’t the cheapest form of transportation.

Maybe a road trip sounds more appealing? But are you okay with spending most of your time driving to and from? What about the wear and tear on your car? And of course, lodging is still a consideration.

What if you simply ... stayed home?

However, staying at home doesn’t mean just sitting around the house. This is the beauty of a “staycation.”

A staycation is more than just staying at home during your time off—it’s maximizing the resources you have around you. In staycationing, your vacation is spent in or near your home. In other words, you are just as much of a tourist, but in your surrounding community. You might seek out local hidden gems, like museums or neighborhoods, or take in the nature in your vicinity. It could be as easy as a day at the beach, or a night at hotel in your hometown.

For this reflection, explore the joys of staycationing. Consider the ways staycations can be just as fulfilling as traditional vacations—often at fraction of the cost or effort. What aspects of staycations most appeal to you? Finally, if you were to staycation in your hometown, what might that look like?
