Reflection 4: Wearing Out Our Welcome—Global Perceptions of the US and Traveling Abroad
Traditionally, Americans have enjoyed a warm welcome in most countries around the world. However, with such dramatic shifts in our politics recently, that welcome mat may be a little harder to find these days. In fact, the United States is currently experiencing a historically low level of global perception. But how does this affect Americans traveling abroad? Consider both the positive and negative perceptions that people in other countries, such as Canada and Mexico, might hold about American culture and politics. In light of these current views, how we might need to adjust our behaviors, communication styles, or expectations when visiting other countries? What kinds of awareness, respect, or adaptability might help us create more positive experiences and interactions abroad?
